Founder and Director, Annabel, needed the visuals for CyberSafe Scotland to be brought up to par with all the effort her and the team put in to help educate children in the Aberdeen area (and beyond!) about staying safe online.
As a social enterprise, CyberSafe Scotland needed to be able to work on the fly with lower budgets which meant that creations often had to work in Canva whenever possible (which is not always) so the team could take over the day-to-day assets.
CyberSafe have three main audiences so designs can adjust slightly between these, teachers and others in education, parents and the pupils themselves.
Together we’ve accomplished:
- Logo and visual branding refresh
- An initial campaign for Safer Internet Day which grew into further work
- Digital and printed assets for various campaigns such as Girls Groups, Boys Groups, Respected & Safe.
- Marketing material for use at a variety of events, from posters, roller banners, t-shirts, flyers and more.
- 20+ documents, for both digital and printed use.
- An ever growing hand drawn icon set for the Respected & Safe campaign.
- A genuinely lovely working relationship
brand visuals REFRESH

The first problem was that, whilst they were happy with the overall look, their logo wasn’t supplied in all the formats they required and it needed a little refresh. I made some subtle adjustments to the logo itself along with the brand colours and typography.

- The font has been adjusted to a similar, clean and modern Google font which is easy to use throughout the branding, by anyone on their team.
- Scotland is set in uppercase to feel tidier below the speech bubble.
- The spacing within between CyberSafe and the bubble has been increased to be consistent.
- The tail of the bubble has been made thicker to remain bold at smaller sizes.
- The logo itself has been supplied so it could be used in full colour, or single colour. The latter is now the most used version.
- Logo is available with and without Scotland.
- Created a logo mark consisting of just the bubble which can be used within footers of documents, often opposite URLs.
- Created a mini bubble CS mark for use as a favicon and other extremely small uses.

BRAND COLOUR PALETTE

The original colours felt harsh, so I toned them down and added in a pink which was requested by the team.
The pink works nicely with the rest of the revised brand colours, giving us another strong colour to work off and balance out the blue – especially with girls being such a large part of what CyberSafe Scotland work towards as women and girls face higher rates of harassment and abuse. And whilst I’m certainly not a woman who opts for pink = female it does offer a nice divide when playing off the existing colours.
BRAND TYPOGRAPHY
The CyberSafe team needed to be able to use the fonts without any issues over various different applications – such as Microsoft Office and Canva. So we opted for Google Fonts with Inter being the main typeface. A clean, easy to read, modern option, offering plenty of weights to help us display information in various ways.
For annotations, highlighted text and headings I added in a child-like handwritten typeface called Nanum Pen which works with the target audience. It brings a little bit of character to the documents with the main typeface being extremely legible but also very plain. It should be used in either pink or yellow and when possible this should be tilted 2°.

BRANDED COLLATERAL
The second problem was that the logo was all they had, so they needed some art direction in order to build consistency with everything they put out.
There’s a mix of material created for CyberSafe. Some of it is used for marketing, more-so brand awareness. The bulk is created to be used in schools (with a split between teachers, pupils and parents) in order to inform and also work through lessons with the pupils (such as leaflets, worksheets, lesson slides etc). Then there’s also some assets that have been created for use at events for more educational purposes. Only a small selection is shown here.

HAND DRAWN ILLUSTRATIONS AND ICONS
Building from having a child-like element to the brand, Annabel wanted an illustration for use on branded materials . This then expanded to become an icon set which is constantly being added to.
The team identify icons which would work well with what they want to share and I create them. Here’s the bubble and devices illustration which started it all alongside a small selection of icons. These are drawn on paper and then recreated digitally and saved as PNG and SVGs meaning they can be used on Canva, at any size and whichever (brand) colour they wish.

We have been really fortunate to work with Liv – she is an amazing designer, innovative and understanding – and super intelligent, funny and a lovely person too! She is calm under pressure and has really elevated our work through her ability to communicate. Her intuition for our brand has been incredible. I’m delighted to recommend her!

PRINT FOR GROUP SESSIONS
CyberSafe Scotland wanted to have documents to hand out to the children in the groups. Something for them to keep with them and look back on whenever they may need to.
We put together an A5 presentation folder with gold foil on the front which holds bi-fold flyers with information on different topics, for example introducing the children to what CyberSafe do and what to do if they, or someone they know, faces harassment.
The folder can then also hold other items they gather during their sessions. Inside the folder we’ve used a business card to reiterate that “Everything that happens to you online is important“ as a keep-sake plus some A6 post cards. For the girls groups we introduced a curvy script font to help be along the lines of what they’ll enjoy visually.
Here’s an example of the bi-fold flyers.

get to know CyberSafe,
their work is important
CyberSafe’s work involves them educating children within local schools in how to stay safe online to educating adults across the UK on big issues such as Child Sexual Abuse Materials (CSAM), sexploitation and the use of chat bots which aren’t so child-friendly. They listen to stories told by the children and plan their lessons accordingly, whilst gathering data to present to the police, councils and the media. Annabel also appears on BBC Radio, BBC News and others to speak about the issues at hand.
I’m proud to be an extremely small part in what CyberSafe Scotland do. Their team is amazing and whilst they serve the local area, the work they do is helpful not only nationally but all around the world in order to help combat the misuse of technology and to help keep children safe.
You can find out more on their website.
I’ll add more as time goes on. A lot of what I create is for internal or school based use.
