I started working on this piece a few weeks ago, purely for practice on Adobe Illustrator. I’ve started trying out illustrator more these days, I find it quite relaxing and a nice change to what I usually do. My aim was to make a pretty aggressive looking rifle look a little more innocent, by using bright colors and breaking it up into softer shapes (bare in mind I changed it a lot). That was inspired by my anti-gun mum, and because I’ve always liked the look of the M-4 and I think it’s a nice rifle to shoot bar the heavy battle trigger. I ended up altering the piece a fair bit to fit in with this ‘If I weren’t a Designer, I Would Be…’ project, which I was going to submit it to as it linked into the Armed Forces. The version you see above is how it would look but without the ‘I Would Be’ text.
…However two days after I had spent a stupid amount of hours on this project which was said to have no rules I saw a tweet saying “If I feel your ‘I Would Be’ submissions will offend anyone or promote violence in anyway, I will reject them..” therefore I asked about rifles and the link to the Armed Forces and I was told it would be refused. Slightly annoyed and offended would be an understatement. I shoot for sport on the regular (it’s one of the safest sports in Britain believe it or not)… guns may have been designed to kill however I use them a fair amount and haven’t killed anything nor do I plan to – and so do many others. Violent? I think not, but I’ll thank the media for that portrayal. Also, I’m bit miffed can’t reclaim that time I spent trying to finish it because honestly, that should have been stated in the rules from the start. Sorry for the rant, I’m just a bit tired of people only seeing the bad parts of firearms use. Who gets the most Gold medals for Britain? The UK Shooting team. I shit you not.
Anywhoo I won’t let it go to waste, I think I’ll get myself an A3 print for my wall. 1. to motivate me to try doing more pieces in illustrator and 2. to annoy my mum
hehe
For anyone wanting to find out more about shooting please watch this video. I’m doing what the nice man at the end of the video asks
